Dudley Saunders crosses the border and includes Vancouver as a stop on his tour of the Pacific NW.
Dudley was included on my first promo compilation The Independents I produced for Braun and Brains Music a few years ago. I am beyond thrilled to share the bill with Dudley for his Vancouver debut! Its gonna be a fantastic show hope you can make it out!
"Anti-folkie" Dudley Saunders explores a peculiar brand of American balladry that bounds from the starkness of Nebraska-era Bruce Springsteen to acoustic-based R.E.M at their most gleeful and trancelike.
AMPLIFIER REVIEW "Before Dudley Saunders embarked on a career in art-washed Americana, he was a performance artist, which may go a long way toward explaining the dramatic and visually rich tone of his third album, THE EMERGENCY LANE. There is a natural tendency to draw parallels between Saunders and ‘Hissing of Summer Lawns'-era Joni Mitchell, as Saunders' wire walk between the simplicity of folk and the complexity of jazz, exhibited both musically and lyrically, mirrors Mitchell's own creative explorations..."Brian Baker

Folk Up and Funk Out February 8th
Three acclaimed Vancouver singer-songwriters Norine Braun, Taylor Harp and Karen Larson folk up and funk out Sunday Night February 8, 8pm at the Backstage Lounge for an $8 cover promising to make it a night to remember.
Braun’s impressive and prolific catalog of 7 albums recorded/released over the past few years according to Progressiveworld.net, is “all over the musical map, stretching...her vocals into pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, spoken-word, blues...you name it, she's got it covered.†Braun’s musical bedrock is steeped in soul in a sound that Indie-Music.com has observed “has great depth, versatility, and provides a fresh alternative to pretty much anything . †The recipient of awards including ‘Female Singer-Songwriter of the Year’ in the Jazz Category at the Independent L.A. Music Awards (2006) and Winner of Artists Inspired By Literature International Songwriting Competition, Braun, even as a newcomer, has dazzled her critics as “a rare find,†according to The Best Female Musicians Magazine. Ink19 Magazine, meanwhile, has observed that while “people throw the word eclectic around a lot these days...pop vocalist Norine Braun...earns that label.â€

It is a rarity to find someone this adept at an instrument, and who also has such a strong and clear control of their voice, that both individually could move you. Taylor Harp, a singer-songwriter based in Vancouver BC, is one of these people. His voice has a gentle warmness that soothes your soul like the sun and effortlessly drifts over a blues and rock influenced acoustic guitar littered with subtle inflections that are both well-crafted and perfectly emphasize his soulful laid-back vocal approach.

Karen Larson’s debut album 'Fire and Ice', showcasing some of Vancouver's finest musicians showcases both her rich, soulful vocals and gift for moving seamlessly between rootsy country-tinged pop and smoldering jazzy blues. Karen Larson is a talented songwriter that digs deep for her lyrics and turns the personal into the universal, using firsthand incidents as launch pads to an emotional realm familiar to all. Larson’s honesty translates well. Her performances, whether solo with her guitar, duo with her husband/pianonist, Pat Covernton, or with a band, attest to her ability to reach audiences. Performing at events like: Grrrls with Guitars, Afternoon of Music Festivals, Songwriters in the Round,Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Manitoba Stampede and the Vancouver East Cultural Centre. Karen has also organized, hosted and performed at the twenty week concert series 'Music4Food' for the Vancouver Food Bank
