Ascending Lullaby is a song about my Mother’s passing and is symbolic for the transitioning from one life to another. My Mother deeply loved birds she had a bird bath in her front yard that she faithfully cleaned everyday and would sit in her swivel rocking chair and watch the birds come and go, drink and bathe. These sightings were often the focus of our phone conversations in her elder years.

When Mom was in hospital in the height of covid and declining we had to move her into hospice. After transferring and being moved from the stretcher to her bed despite being so ill and weak her face lit up as she saw that outside her window was a bird feeder full of birds welcoming her. Her deep joy despite the difficult circumstance taught me so much that amidst great suffering there can still be joy and gratitude. She fought so very hard to stay alive as long as she could she loved her life, family and friends.

In the song Mom becomes a Whippoorwill. I chose this beautiful bird as Mom and I both loved the Hank Williams song, I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry and the lyric about hearing the lonesome Whippoorwill always stood out to me. When I researched this bird I found it’s habitat is greatly threatened in Eastern Canada and the US largely due to pesticide use, industrial development and climate change so I wanted to bring this awareness as well. In folklore to hear a Whippoorwill sing by a window is a sign of impending death. In other stories they can grant wishes and heal pain.

In the context of the album, Mom passed Easter Sunday that year the day before my birthday and then the day after my birthday I got word my biological father was alive, he knew of me and wanted to connect. One life had ended and another began. Perhaps somehow in the next world she helped grant my wish of uncovering my ancestry and knew connecting that with my Dad would help me move through the heavy grief at losing her. Hunting Buffalo is my second single to be released. Last year was my second visit to meet my birth father and paternal family in Manitoba. On our way back from Winnipeg.we drove through a hamlet originally called Grantown. Many of my Red River Metis ancestors lived there and took up farming after the last of the buffalo hunting dwindled. The area beside the Assiniboine River is where they would meet up to camp before the buffalo hunts and then later return with their Red River Carts filled for winter. Standing by the river I closed my eyes toward the sun I could feel the ancestors. After a lifetime of wondering who and where I came from I found them. I could hear them sing to me about a time long ago. With gratitude to First Peoples' Cultural Council.

Journey Toward Wholeness Coming Soon!

Norine Braun Embarks on a Soulful Journey Toward Wholeness with Her Upcoming Album

Canadian Singer-Songwriter Recording Artist Norine Braun Unveils Transformative Musical Odyssey with Upcoming Album 'Journey Toward Wholeness,' Exploring Identity, Heritage, and the Universal Quest for Self-Discovery

Canadian singer-songwriter Norine Braun, celebrated for her prolific career spanning 14 albums, is set to release her highly anticipated new album, "Journey Toward Wholeness," in May 2024. The creation of this poignant album was made possible through the support of a grant from the First Peoples' Cultural Council.

The album delves deep into Norine Braun's personal journey as an adoptee, exploring the challenges of forming an authentic sense of self when growing up away from a bloodline. "Journey Toward Wholeness" is a testament to Braun's resilience and her symbolic and literal quest for roots that played a crucial role in her pursuit of completeness.

Braun's story takes a compelling turn as she shares her decade-long struggle to uncover her paternal roots. Last year, in the midst of grieving the passing of her loving mother—who had adopted her—Braun received a life-altering email from a second cousin who unveiled the identity of her birth father. The revelation not only connected her with a living parent but also opened the door to a newfound family filled with musicians, trappers, World War II veterans, and even historical figures such as her great, great, great grandfather, Pierre Poitras, a member of Louis Riel’s council of 40. Braun discovered that she belongs to the Red River Metis heritage, a revelation that is explored and celebrated in her upcoming album.

The musical narrative of "Journey Toward Wholeness" is a reflection of Braun's quest for completeness and her desire to share the discovery of her paternal bloodline, the Red River Metis. The album promises a rich and evocative experience, combining Braun's soulful vocals with a melodic exploration of identity, heritage, and the universal journey of self-discovery.

With the album release scheduled for May 2024, Norine Braun invites audiences to join her on this transformative musical odyssey. The album promises to resonate with those who, like Braun, have faced the challenges of unknown ancestry, offering insight and inspiration to individuals on their own journeys of self-discovery.
